Grantchester star Tom Brittney has changed up his look after announcing his exit from the ITV detective drama earlier this year.

The actor, who filmed his final scenes for the series back in August, couldn't look more different from his character Reverend Will Davenport in a new post to Instagram that shows the 32-year-old rocking a beard, whilst donning a Vans cap and Thrasher T-shirt.

The snap showed the star looking deeply focused whilst sitting in what appears to be a director's chair.

Whilst Tom's caption didn't give anything away about his new project, fans were quick to question whether the Kent-born actor is turning his hand to directing. One person asked: "Have you stepped into the director's chair this time around?" while another wrote: "What are you directing Tom?"

Others also commented on Tom's new look, with one person writing: "The beard is on point. Nice!" while another simply added: "Wow!"

This wouldn't be the first time Tom has gone behind the camera, as he previously directed an episode of Grantchester in season seven.

Speaking about directing the instalment at the time, the actor said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be given the opportunity to direct an episode this series, it's been a life ambition of mine and I can't wait for the audience to see it (and also I can finally order Robson about!)."

Tom announced his departure from the drama in a statement released in July, saying it was "time for the baton to be passed" to someone else, just like the role was handed to him by James Norton in 2019.

"I've had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years," he said. "I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for. I'll miss it more than anything. But it's time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I'm so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family."

Tom will be replaced by Hollyoaks actor Rishi Nair, who will star alongside Robson Green - aka Geordie Keating - as new vicar Alphy Kotteram.

The "charismatic" new arrival is described as having "an instinctive distrust for authority and absolutely no desire to get involved in murder investigations".

The PBS synopsis continues: "But Alphy and Geordie will discover they have a lot more in common than they first think, and Alphy will find that in Grantchester, murder is never far away."

On joining the show as the new lead, Rishi, 32, said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining Grantchester. The welcome and support I've received from everyone has been overwhelming."

The star added: "The success of the show and the reason we are here for a ninth season is a testament to all the people that have previously worked on it. I'm really excited to get started and cannot wait for the Grantchester fans to meet Alphy and to see all that's in store for him."

Filming for season nine wrapped earlier this month, and while season eight has already aired in the US, ITV has yet to announce a release date for UK fans.
