Oppenheimer and Poor Things stormed the 2024 Oscars, marking the end of what had become a predictable awards season.

Oppenheimer picked up Best Picture, and director Christopher Nolan took home Best Directing, while Poor Things scooped three below-the-line awards and a Best Actress statue for Emma Stone.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph picked up the first award of the night, Best Supporting Actress, while The Boy and the Heron, and War Is Over, took home the animated awards, and American Fiction and Anatomy of the Fall won the writing categories.

Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr both won the Actor and Supporting Actor categories for their work in Oppenheimer, while Bille Eilish won her second Oscar at the age of 22 for her song 'What Was I Made For?' from Barbie.

This awards season has felt sewn up for weeks, with Cord Jefferson's win for Adapted Screenplay, and Emma's win over Lily, the only real surprises; Cillian, Robert, Da'Vine, Christopher, Billie and Justine were all well-deserved winners but when the same names win the same awards every other weekend, it's hard to feel like anything will change by the time this weekend rolls around.

Host Jimmy Kimmel's jokes mostly fell flat (incest, drug addiction, and Trump... ) although the John Cena bit brought some much-needed levity - and halfway through it felt like even Jimmy was wondering how to save the show from itself. His saving grace, thankfully, came from Ryan Gosling and his furiously fantastic performance of 'I'm Just Ken' with Slash, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
