When people say things that we don't want to hear, do we try not to listen? Sometimes. But as any psychologist will confirm, humans are tricky and complicated. Sometimes, it turns out that we secretly want to hear something that we don't want to hear because this can then be used as a justification for saying, in return, something that we suspect the other person probably doesn't want to hear! Jennifer Aniston launched a million copycat hairstyles and became a household name across the globe playing Rachel in one of the best comedy series of all time, Friends. Since then the actress has gone on to become one of the world's best stylish icons – and in 2014 took on her most serious big screen role to date, in Cake.
Born on February 11, 1969, Jennifer grew up in the LA town of Sherman Oaks. Acting runs in Jen's family – her father won a part on the US soap opera, Days Of Our Lives. In 1980 her parents divorced and Jennifer lived mainly with her mother Nancy – although the two later fell out after Nancy talked about her famous daughter on US TV.
After starring on several forgettable TV shows, Jennifer was cast in Friends in 1994 as Central Perk cafe waitress Rachel Green, alongside Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry. The global success of the programme ensured the six stars were among the highest-paid TV actors after they agreed individual salaries of $750,000 per show in 2000.
But what Jennifer really wanted was silver screen success, and the Friends phenomenon had studio executives in a frenzy and she was offered many roles. Several of these were romantic comedies such as She's The One and The Object Of My Affection.
Unfortunately none made much of an impact, but Jennifer was still the first actor from Friends to be honoured with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
In 2014, Jennifer premiered Cake, a new kind of role for the 46-year-old actress. Playing a prescription drug addict who had been in a terrible car accident, Jennifer won rave reviews at the Toronto Film Festival, and her performance continued to garner buzz over the awards season.
Early in January 2015, Jennifer found herself nominated for all important SAG and Golden Globes awards, but sadly did not gain her first Oscar nomination - the fifth spot went to French actress Marion Cotillard.
In her private life, it was the news that she was stepping out with Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt that made headlines. In July 2000 the pair tied the knot in a romantic, cliff-top ceremony in Malibu. The union was not to last, however, and four-and-a-half-years later, in January 2005, the couple announced their separation.
In 2011, Jennifer found love on the set of Wanderlust, falling for her handsome co-star Justin Theroux. After 15 months of dating the couple announced their engagement, although they are yet to set a date for their wedding.
