Selena Gomez has admitted to undergoing therapy following body-shaming comments from the media and public. The 23-year-old revealed that "this was the first year" she faced "awful" criticism regarding her figure and weight, particularly after sharing a bikini picture of herself on Instagram during a holiday in Mexico.

Selena Gomez is undergoing therapy after body-shamers left comments on Instagram

"This was the first year I ever dealt with anyone talking about my body," she told Us Weekly. "I'd land at the airport and people would yell out, 'You're fat!'. It was awful."

The Good for You singer posted a photo of herself in a bikini back in May, intended as a positive body image message in response to comments made in the media about her figure.

"I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove," she wrote alongside the photo to her 46.1 million followers. However, body-shamers quickly took to the social media site leaving comments that she confessed caused her to seek professional help.

"I've been working in therapy," she said. "Even if I did gain weight, I'm fine. That's what the picture represents."

Selena battled with lupus in 2013

She added: "Each year, I'm becoming more who I am. I have a little more self-awareness. I feel confident and free. I'm not going to hide in my room and be depressed."

It's not the only challenge Selena has faced in recent years. The Tell Me Something I Don't Know hitmaker recently opened about her battle with lupus for the first time, revealing she was diagnosed with the disease in 2013, forcing her to cancel legs of her tour and take time out of the spotlight.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy," she told Billboard Magazine, dismissing speculation that the break had been because of a stint in rehab. "That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke."
