Cara Delevingne: 'I am sick and tired of society's beauty standards'

May 4, 2017

Actress and model Cara Delevingne has expressed concern about beauty expectations after critics slammed her new bald look. The Brit walked runways and fronted campaigns for legendary fashion houses such as Chanel before becoming an in-demand movie star in films like Suicide Squad and Paper Towns, but she admits she couldn't be more disgusted with mainstream definitions of beauty.

"Its (sic) exhausting to be told what beauty should look like," she wrote on her Instagram account on Wednesday in a caption attached to a picture of herself in character as a bald cancer patient for her upcoming drama Life in a Year. "I am tired of society defining beauty for us."

The 24-year-old recently shaved off her blonde locks to go bald for her role, opposite Jaden Smith and Cuba Gooding, Jr, and in her social media post, she came to the defence of her new look, calling out trolls for dubbing the buzz cut ugly. "Strip away the clothes, Wipe Off the make up, cut off the hair. Remove all the material possessions. Who are we?" she questioned. "How are we defining beauty? What do we see as beautiful?"

Cara's tone on shaving her head has become far more serious since she went bald last month. She was initially excited to be switching up her look for the film and she even dyed her hair white as an experiment before the buzz cut. "I have to shave my head for my next part, so I have to do something different, so I dyed it. Just for fun. Just to change it up," she said at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Cara's Life in a year co-star Jaden also lost his hair for his part in the movie - the star used the dreadlocks he chopped off as a bouquet accessory while attending the Met Gala in New York City on Monday.
