Healing crystals: Kate Hudson admits she likes to ‘add a little energy’ to her favourite moisturiser by storing it next to them, Victoria Beckham revealed she carries them with her during her busy fashion week season and Kim Kardashian has said she used them to get over her robbery ordeal in 2017. The Olsen twins even gave out crystals in goodie bags at their latest New York Fashion Week show! It’s the latest holistic craze to hit the mainstream, but what’s the meaning behind these so-called powerful crystals?

What are healing crystals?

“Crystals are powerful healing tools which can be used to boost your energy system,” says Carol. “Although they may seem like inert objects, they are conduits of energy - which is why they are used in watches, radios and some medical devices. Powdered crystals are also ingredients in mainstream beauty products.

“Crystals are formed in a wide range of environments, which blend pressure, chemicals and temperatures to create specific stones through sections of the earth which naturally move - or plate tectonics. It is well-known that crystals amplify energy in a process called ‘piezoelectricity’ - in other words a voltage runs through them - and today hospitals use quartz crystals and piezoelectric crystal sensors in diagnostic work.”

How are they used?

“Our body system has energy flowing around it, in various patterns and densities. The word chakra is used often in energy work to describe energy centres in the human body. There are seven major chakras, running from the base of the spine to the top of the head, called the root, the sacral, the solar plexus, the heart, the throat, the third eye and the crown,” explains Carol.

“Another term that is often used in energy work is the aura. This is a multi-layered sphere of energy emanating from the body. It acts like a protective layer that filters out harmful energies. This is what we connect to when we have a feeling about a person or a place. If we are around people who are negative, we could feel quite drained being around them for too long - this is simply our aura filtering through some of that information.

“Equally, if we were working in a negative environment for a long period of time our natural energy pattern can be disrupted, and when this happens we experience poor health. This can be anything from a headache to a fairly serious illness.

“Crystals can be used to rebalance the chakras and cleanse the aura. Each chakra regulates physical vitality and emotions so once it is balanced a person will improve their health and experience more harmony. As a crystal’s energy pattern cannot be disrupted it will naturally act like a tuning fork and retune us to the original organic pattern of energy that belongs to our bodies.”

What is crystal therapy?

“In a crystal therapy treatment a client would lay down on a couch fully clothed while the therapist places a crystal or crystals on the body’s chakra points, or places them underneath the couch,” says Carol. “As the crystal begins to retune the chakra area, a client may feel sensations such as tingling, heat, cold, slight pressure, or they may just completely relax and fall asleep.”

How can crystals be used at home?

“The easiest way to use crystals at home is to match the colour of crystal to the colour of the chakra that is being worked on. The root chakra is red, the sacral is orange, the solar plexus is yellow, the heart is green, the throat is blue, the third eye (middle of forehead) is indigo and the crown is violet,” says Carol.

“So for example, the crystal called Red Jasper could be used on the root chakra, citrine on the sacral, tiger eye on the solar plexus, emerald on the heart, turquoise on the throat, lapis lazuli on the third eye and charoite on the crown.

“Crystals can also be used in the bath to keep the aura clear of old or unwanted energy. Remember to check that they are not water soluble of course as some can dissolve in water! You can also place them around the bathtub and their beneficial effects and energy exchange will still occur.”

What does each individual crystal do?

“Three of the most common crystals are clear quartz, rose quartz and amethyst,” says Carol. “Clear quartz is a master healer and draws off negative energy of all kinds. You can place other types of crystals onto a Clear Quartz cluster to cleanse them.

“Rose quartz connects to the heart chakra and so restores trust and harmony in relationships - it also helps with friendships, self-love and feelings of peace. Amethyst is good for clarity of mind and releasing stress. It is also good to meditate with to improve spiritual awareness.”
