Jessica Alba marks New Year with new cut

But does it also mark the end of the bob?

We thought once Victoria Beckham had her trendsetting bob-short last year, it would signal the end of a style that left its mark on more celebrities than any other hair trend since the poker straight look that came with the advent of ghd's. But after an initial flurry, the majority of hairdressers seem to be reporting that the Posh crop has had little long-term effect on client requests.

Paul Labrecque, celebrity stylist to Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Swank and Helen Mirren, told us that his salon in New York has seen hardly any copycat cuts being requested by clients since Posh unveiled her new look, while the bob was still popular. But with a couple of new looks we've seen this week, we're wondering if, at last, it's time to wave bye-bye to the bob in its classic, jaw-length form. Firstly Jaime Winstone was seen out with a long fringed bob – great for growing out a style.

And now Jessica Alba has had her gorgeous tresses cut into a long bob with a matching fringe that makes it look groomed and sophisticated. The sharp lines between the strong fringe and straight sides and ends make it great for highlighting features, particularly cheekbones and eyes – which is why it harks back to the days of Cleopatra, whose heavily outlined eyes and striking bone structure were as much a trademark as her hairstyle.
