Looking glamorous is all part of the job, particularly when you're playing one of Mad Men's blonde bombshells, Betty Draper. But now it looks like January Jones may be paying a price for her infamous bleached platinum bouffant she dons for the role. The 35-year-old star – who was recently in Utah promoting the release of her latest film, Sweetwater – may have looked gorgeous and relaxed in her portrait at the Sundance Film Festival, but she opened up to reporters at the event: "I have been every colour and now my hair is falling out in clumps".
Through her varied and glittering career the mum-of-one has gone from a brunette, all shades of blonde, to finally a redhead with strawberry-coloured extensions for her newest movie. Having your hair styled, preened and coloured on a regular basis may seem a perk of living the highlife. But, with dry, brittle and damaged locks the star, a natural blonde, admitted that the situation had created so many bald patches that she planned to shave her head. "I've been blonde, red with extensions for this film, then blonde, then black, and now blonde again. I'm going to have to shave it off and wear a wig", she told reporters. But, despite the hair loss, January has admitted that she's just one of many women who loves to dye her hair: "I like it all colours, it makes you feel different according to what colour it is, but I prefer to be blonde. "My son [16-month-old Xander Dane] recognises me in photos when I am blonde. He says, 'mama'."With many other stars reaching for the bleach, it seems that January isn't the only one with bad results from the bottle.
Lady Gaga admitted in 2011 that she had to have a "chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out".And, not by choice, television star Kelly Osbourne similarly had her own little disaster in 2009 when her hair colourist reportedly forgot about her. The lengthy stay of dye in her hair unfortunately left her poor bleached strands breaking off.
Most recently, Twilight star Anna Kendrick annouced that she had also been losing locks, not as a sacrifice to style, but as a result of her busy schedule putting her body under unnecessary emotional stress. In this case the scalp tightens, restricting flood flow and effectively cutting off nutrients to the hair root leading it to fall out.
The good news for those suffering from stress-induced hair loss is that the hair tends to regrow naturally of its own accord – as was the case with Anna.
