Fight the frizz: top tips for taming unruly hair

May 18, 2015

Victoria Beckham recently caused a social media frenzy when she shared a photo on Instagram during her trip to Singapore, revealing the country's humidity had wreaked havoc on her hair and left her with a frizzy mane. While the fashion designer had close friend and hair stylist Ken Paves on hand to help her fight the frizz, you don't always need a glam squad to help keep your hair in great shape.

We take a look at the top ways to fight the frizz to keep your hair looking its best this season.

Use specialist de-frizzing shampoo and conditioner

Frizziness is caused when unwanted moisture – from the tap or damp atmosphere- makes its way into your tresses. Anti-frizz products contain ingredients that coat the hair, keeping natural moisture in and unwanted dampness out. We love Bumble & Bumble Straight shampoo (£23 for 250ml) for a sleek finish.

Use anti-frizz serum on wet hair

While hair is wet, not just damp, use a 50p size of serum or smoothing balm to keep moisture locked in, and avoid damage when styling. John Frieda's Frizz-Ease hair serum (£6.29) is a great option for those with permed or coloured hair.

Let your hair dry naturally

Leave your hair to dry naturally, or towel-dry it. If you don't have time and need to use a dryer, then dry your hair downwards to keep the cuticles flat. Ionic dryers, such as the GHD Air Hair Dryer (£89), are great for smoothing hair and neutralising static – make sure to keep the dryer close to your head and constantly moving.

Avoid over-styling

Straighteners and hair dryers can damage your locks and leave them brittle and dull. Try to avoid brushing your hair once it's dried, as this can stretch the hairs and cause breakage. If you need to restyle, comb through your hair with wet fingers – this will also tame any tangles. Try not to use fine-tooth combs as these can also damage your tresses.

Go for regular trims

Keep your locks in good shape with regular visits to the hairdresser, roughly once ever six to ten weeks depending on the condition of your hair. This will help you to avoid split ends and dryness, which are guaranteed to lead frizz-friendly hair looking fried to a crisp.
