Diane Kruger almost never strays from her golden hair colour, so fans were surprised when the 39-year-old stepped out for an awards ceremony recently rocking auburn tresses. However, the Troy leading lady has now admitted that her makeover was actually an accident.

Diane Kruger confessed she accidentally dyed her hair a different colour

The German beauty revealed that it was while trying to dye her hair at home that she ended up completely changing the colour instead of topping up her blonde tones.

"I hadn't coloured my hair in six months and I had been away working for two months," Diane explained to Allure magazine. "I'm in New York, and it looked a little dull, so I just thought 'I'll go to CVS and buy a gloss'. Only it turned my hair a dark mud brown."

Instead of trying to fix the mistake herself, the actress decided to call in the experts, turning to celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant to help turn her locks back to their original shade.

The actress was back to her usual blonde hues for the amfAR Gala

"I called anybody that I know in New York who could help me. Serge Normant literally saved me [this morning]," she said at the time. "And now it's slightly red but it's getting better. I have to keep going back. The woman at the salon who is helping me said it's going to take three visits."

The National Treasure star, who is dating fellow actor Joshua Jackson, debuted her light red hair as she attended the Golden Heart Awards hosted by Michael Kors in New York, turning heads in a striking royal blue pleated floor-length dress with black pattern detailing and a belted waist.

Diane seems to have completed the back to blonde process, as she was recently spotted with her original hair colour. Arriving at the star-studded amfAR Gala in Los Angeles on Friday, the Mr Nobody actress showed off her glossy hair in tousled waves.
