November 23, 2015

All eyes were on Gigi Hadid as she stepped out for the American Music Awards on Sunday rocking an edgy new bob hairstyle. However, the 20-year-old hinted that change might not be permanent – and now hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, the man behind her striking 'do, has revealed the secret to her edgy look.

Gigi Hadid rocked a short faux bob hairstyle

"We put a partial wig over the back half of her hair to cover most of the length then combining in her real hair in the front," Bryce told Elle. "We then cut the hairpiece to blend with her shortest layers."

Bryce also revealed his top tip for those wanting to rock a faux bob, both on and off the red carpet.

"The key is that your natural hairline is showing," he said. "The technique we used works if you have shorter layers that are the length that you want the hairpiece to match."

The star turned heads with her edgy look on the AMAs red carpet

Gigi herself first sparked speculation that her dramatic makeover wasn't permanent when she spoke to E! red carpet host Giuliana Rancic on the star-studded red carpet, which saw the likes of Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez pulling out all the stops for the glitzy ceremony.

"You can check back tomorrow to see if I have short hair," Gigi teased. "There are tricks of the trade."

Gigi is not the first star to turn to wigs to try out a new hairstyle. Keeping up with the Kardashians star Kylie Jenner has become renowned for using them to experiment with different looks, from mint green hair to a blunt fringe.

"I discovered this amazing wig guy, Tokyo, and together we create wigs," she confessed in a post on her app. "Wigs are just SO much easier because I change my mind so much and this way I'm not damaging my hair."
