Hilary Duff has embraced the approaching new year with a brand new hairstyle over the weekend. The 28-year-old will be stepping into 2016 rocking one of the season's biggest trends – a gorgeous short bob.

The former Lizzie McGuire star debuted the sleek new style in a striking selfie shared with her 4.8 million Instagram followers. In the close-up snap, Hilary shows off the sleek new blunt style, which falls a few inches above her shoulders – a stark contrast to her trademark long, wavy tumbling locks. "Soooo it's pretty short. Thank you @cynthiavanis chopping," she wrote in the caption.
Earlier that day, Hilary teased her fans about her impending haircut, sharing a black-and-white snap of celebrity hairstylist Cynthia Vanis holding scissors before making the first chop to Hilary's blonde tresses.
It could be that Hilary was marking the end of filming of the second season of TV show Younger, on which she has been working in recent months. No doubt filming would have required her to stick to the same hairstyle, so it could be that she has been considering a new look for a few weeks.

While this makes for a drastic makeover for the actress, it's not the first time that Hilary has experimented with a bold new hairstyle – this year has seen the star showing off her edgy beauty credentials and dyeing her hair a series of bright colours.
The A Cinderella Story actress gave her fans major hair envy earlier this year when she revealed she had ditched her trademark blonde hues in favour of a pastel turquoise blue, quipping that she was inspired by 'mermaids'.
Just a few weeks later, Hilary was once again showing off her fearless approach to beauty when she opted for a completely new colour, this time choosing a pretty bubblegum pink dip dye effect.
