All eyes were on Cate Blanchett as she hit the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night – but it wasn't just her striking gown which caught fans' attention. The 46-year-old debuted a fresh new 'do, revealing she had six inches of her hair chopped off for a sleek new bob style.

Hairstylist Robert Vetica, the man behind the Elizabeth star's new look, revealed that although he and Cate had spoken about going for a new look, they decided to cut her hair short just a few hours before she was due to head to the ceremony.
"We knew we were going to do it. It was a plan. It was strategic," he told Pret-a-Reporter. "We had talked about it for a while, and decided to do it today. We thought it would be perfect because of the dress. And she's had her hair long for a couple years now, so we decided, let's just cut it off and start fresh."
He added: "She's Cate Blanchett – she can do whatever she wants!"
The star had been rocking shoulder-length hair in recent months
Looking as elegant as ever, Cate topped best-dressed lists around the world at the star-studded Academy Awards, wowing in a pale blue Armani Privé gown with floral embellishment. She teamed her breathtaking gown with dazzling floral pendant earrings, a diamond bracelet and a pear-shaped diamond ring, all from luxury jewellers Chopard.
It's not the first time she has turned to the Italian fashion house for a major red carpet event – she also chose a beautiful gown from the label at the Oscars in 2014, where she had picked up the Best Actress trophy for her role in Blue Jasmine.
Although this year the Australian beauty was once again nominated in the category, this time for her performance in Carol, she lost out to Room star Brie Larson.
