In the short video, shared with his 7.5 million followers, Hugh can be seen taking an electric razor to the short hairs, and bidding farewell as he begins to shave them off. "My wife is going to be very happy. #GoodbyeChops #thedebs," he quipped in the accompanying caption.

It no doubt marked the end of an era for X-Men fans, with Hugh having played Wolverine in the series' film franchises since first taking on the role in 2000.

Hugh has previously admitted that he would not be returning as the superhero with animal-like qualities and retractable metal claws. Before heading to New Mexico to film the third instalment of the Wolverine films, he explained that it was his "last one".

"This will be my last one," he confessed during an appearance on the Dr. Oz show. "It just felt like it was the right time to do it."

The Australian star went on to admit that he had not expected the franchise's global success, but added that he wanted to leave on a high note.

Hugh and his wife just celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary

"And let's be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I'm so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it," he explained. "I kind of have in my head what we're going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out."

It's not the only milestone that Hugh has enjoyed this year. In April 2016, the actor and his producer wife Deborra-Lee celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary. Hugh thrilled his fans by posting a black-and-white snap from the big day on Instagram, simply captioning it: "20 years ago on this day…" The couple, who tied the knot in 1996, first met on the set of Australian TV show Correlli in 1995.
