The Weeknd has chopped off his signature hairstyle

This marks a major change for the singer, whose real name Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye, who has been rocking the same haircut since he first burst onto the scene in 2010.

It seems that the Can't Feel My Face hitmaker chose to go for the fresh 'do ahead of the launch of his latest album Starboy, for which he stars in the cover artwork.

He is renowned for his trademark floppy hairdo

The singer and producer gave his 6.6 million Instagram followers a first glimpse of the striking images, which see him posing for the camera in front of a bright red backdrop, wearing an all-black ensemble and leather jacket. "I come alive in the fall time," he cryptically captioned one of the images with his freshly-cut hair on full show.

The Weeknd has previously spoken about his iconic 'do, admitting that he wanted a unique look. "I want to be remembered as iconic and different," he told Rolling Stone magazine, later adding: "I'm gonna let my hair just be what it wants".

He is releasing his new album later this year

When it came to going for the chop, at the time he expressed a reluctance to head to the salon. "I'll probably cut it if it starts interfering with my sight," he said. "I can kind of see it right now."

It's been an exciting week for the Toronto-born star, as not only has he revealed that the new album will launch later this year, but its titular single was released this week. The track, on which he collaborated with Daft Punk, has already gained praise from fans, with many taking to social media to share their excitement at hearing the full album at a later date.

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding The Weeknd's upcoming project, following his incredible success so far, which includes eight Billboard Music Awards and three Grammys and even an Oscar nomination for his song Earned It which featured in Fifty Shades of Grey
