How to maintain your red hair’s vibrancy

May 23, 2017

From Julianne Moore to Emma Stone, red hair is becoming increasingly popular thanks to Hollywood's hottest celebrities. But while fiery tresses can look fabulous, red is also the quickest colour to fade – meaning you have to look after it more. We spoke to some hair experts for their best tips on how to keep your red hair looking vibrant.

Julianne Moore's red hair always looks beautifully vibrant

“I'd recommend using a sulphate free shampoo, as these are gentler than your average shampoo and less likely to strip the hair,” Anya Dellicompagni, Francesco Group's Director of Hairdressing, told Cover Media. Tigi Bed Head Urban Antidotes Resurrection is a good option, while Paul Mitchell Ultimate Colour Repair is also popular, thanks to the fact it contains the superfood quinoa to help locks stay bright.

“Try not to over wash your hair too, as this can strip the colour and the hairs natural oils,” Anya added. “Instead, use a dry shampoo where possible to combat the oil but keep the colour looking luminous.” You also have to be careful if you use heated styling products on red hair. Karen Thomson, Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa, added to Cover Media: “Heat damage in particular can lead to dull and faded hair colour, so if you can, try to avoid using heated styling tools wherever possible.

“If you do need to use heated styling tools, ensure you use a heat protecting spray, which will preserve red hair's vibrancy, keep hair looking full of shine and smooth.” A regular conditioning treatment such as a hair mask can also help maintain the red colour, with Dean Jones, director and owner of Dean Jones Hairdressing, explaining to Cover Media: “I would suggest using a colour treatment mask weekly and really try not to wash your hair any more than three times per week.”

Eufora Damage Cure Clay Mask is our favourite, thanks to ingredients such as Kaolin Clay and Shea Butter which help to repair any damage and restore strength and vibrancy to the hair.
