It can be difficult to choose an appropriate hairstyle or colour as you get older, with many women worried they will look as though they're trying too hard to be "hip" if they change their look. We spoke to Karen Brown, owner of Hair by JFK, and asked her for her tips on the best hairstyles for more mature clients. Here's what she had to say.
"By keeping a clean cut and clean ends on grey hair it allows the hair to look a lot healthier," she told us. "Shorter hairstyles often look more elegant on mature ladies and a layered bob, or a tapered haircut can frame the client's face perfectly."
Karen suggests taking vitamin C supplements to strengthen the hair and use a reconstructor conditioner that can help inject some moisture back into the locks. When it comes to colour, the hair expert is all for experimenting.

Helen Mirren looked fantastic with pink hair
"For women feeling daring enough to experiment with bold colours, there are so many bright and pastel hair shades that are on trend at the moment that look great on older women, including purples, pinks, reds, and blues," she smiled. "Dark plum purples and blush pinks are two of my favourite colours to use on older women's hair."
If you've got darker, brunette hair, Karen advises going for a dark plum hue, as the result is "super edgy and adds shine". Or if you have naturally lighter hair, why not follow in the footsteps of Helen Mirren by trying out a blush pink hue?
"Whether it's all over colour, just some sections of colour or balayage with colour, bright hair colours are a great way to show a women's fun personality, whilst looking incredibly on trend," Karen explained. "Changing a client's hair colour can change their entire look as well as enhance their mood, give them confidence and make them feel younger."
