Stranger Things' Steve's hair was inspired by Brad Pitt

Actor Joe Keery was praised for being a "good sport" in growing his hair for the role

Stranger Things star Joe Keery was an "amazing sport" when it came to wearing his hair in a mullet style - which was inspired by the likes of Brad Pitt and George Clooney. The 25-year-old actor plays high school heartthrob Steve Harrington in the Netflix science-fiction horror series, which is set in a small town in Indiana in the 1980s. Joe rocks big hair reminiscent of the era and the show's head of hair department, Sarah Hindsgaul, has praised the star for embracing the trends of the time. "He did a fantastic job growing it," she gushed to Entertainment Weekly. "The only thing his agent was like, 'Please, please, please, can we cut the back off?' and I kept saying, 'No! Cut the front, that's fine, just don't lose the back! Keep the mullet!' Joe is an amazing sport, and we got it there just in time with just a little bit of manoeuvring the first month to make it look a little bit longer than it was in the back."

As for who inspired the 'do, Sarah channelled celebrities such as Brad Pitt and George Clooney during their younger years while styling, with A-ha frontman Morten Harket serving as the biggest muse. Young star Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, also sports a curly mullet at one point in the second series and it was a look which Sarah thoroughly enjoyed creating, mostly thanks to its meaning.

"It was this beautiful moment in the script where they say he tries to do his hair like Steve's, and it's like this big afro, and we tried that, but it looked like he just put his finger into a socket," she laughed. "And I was like, I think it's going to be a lot more emotional if we actually made it look just like Steve's, just with curls. It's so heart-warming that he puts so much work into it and he actually feels like he looks great - it's not a look that went wrong. He fully executes it."
