However, the 32-year-old quickly reassured his fans, revealing that the drastic transformation is part of his role in upcoming movie In the Heart of the Sea.
Chris Hemsworth unveiled his dramatic weight loss on Instagram
The father-of-three initially caused a stir amongst his legions of fans with the striking snap, which sees him having swapped his world-famous muscular physique for a totally different look – a slender, frail-looking build.
"Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea"," he quipped in the caption, referencing the upcoming drama which sees him playing a First Mate left shipwrecked with his crew in the ocean after a whale attacks their boat. He added: "Wouldn't recommend it… #IntheHeartoftheSea."
Adding to the "Lost At Sea" effect, the Avengers: Age of Ultron actor also rocks long dishevelled hair and an unkempt beard, a stark contrast to his usually groomed look.
Chris revealed the weight loss was for an upcoming film
The Thor star has previously opened up about the challenge of losing a dramatic amount of weight for the role. Ahead of the filming of the shipwrecked scenes, he admitted he was prepared to "be pretty uncomfortable" in order to maintain the effect.
"We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to five, six, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks," he told Entertainment Tonight. "And it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery."
Chris, who is married to Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky, also confessed that he wasn't finding the dieting lifestyle particularly appealing, as he often felt hungry. "I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment," he said.
