There's no doubt that Jane Fonda's workout videos have become iconic – with 22 titles and more than 17 million copies sold worldwide, fitness fans have been turning to them for decades in a bid to get in shape. Jane Fonda's workouts have become iconic

On the best workouts:

"Whatever kind of workout you settle on, it should include the Big Three of exercise for health and fitness – aerobics, resistance exercises, and stretching."

On a good fitness regime:

"The absolute minimum for effective exercise is three times a week on alternate days for at least half an hour."

On losing weight:

"You must decrease the amount of food you eat and increase the amount of exercise you get. That is all there is to it."

On healthy eating:

"I try not to have sugars. I try to eat fresh foods. I try to eat something dark green and dark purple, and a variety of colours, every day. I don’t go to bed without having something dark green, dark purple, red, orange, or yellow."

On setting achievable workout goals:

"Your goal should be to take your body and make it as healthy, strong, flexible and well-proportioned as you can."

On snacking:

Keep healthy snacks on hand for between meals - things such as fruit or low-fat cottage cheese or string cheese. Red grapes go well with cheese.

Jane often shares her diet and fitness tips

On the most effective exercises:

"It's important to do both cardio (aerobic) as well as resistance exercises. Aerobic activity is the only thing that gets rid of fat from all over your body including the marbled fat deep inside your muscles — dieting alone can't do this."

On dieting:

"Eat only when you are hungry—not because it is one o'clock or seven o'clock or whatever."

On the importance of breakfast:

Don't skip breakfast! Feed yourself regularly throughout the day. Ideally, you should have one-third of your daily calories in the morning, one-third at midday, and no more than one-third in the evening - so you don't impulsively grab whatever is around.

On balancing diet and fitness:

"Stay active, cut the sugars, reduce carbs."
