It seems we never go a day without hearing about the fad diets and gruelling exercise regimes people will follow in a bid to lose weight. But one Danish woman managed to shed almost half of her body weight through one simple change to her life – eating more slowly.

Mathilde Broberg weighed over 19 stone (129kg) at her heaviest, consuming 3,500 calories every day including junk food and double-size portions. However she was inspired to lose weight when she was almost turned away from a rollercoaster due to her size.

Mathilde Broberg has lost nine stone by eating with a teaspoon

The method she used? Eating her meals with a teaspoon. This simple technique ensured she ate smaller mouthfuls of food and spent longer eating as a result.

Eating slowly is known for being a successful weight loss method, based on the theory that there's a delay between your stomach being full and that being communicated to the brain.

So when we eat too quickly it is easier to overeat as we don't realise how full we actually are.

The fitness model said her weight loss was due to a lifestyle change, not a diet

The method has worked incredibly well for Mathilde, who has slimmed down to a healthy 10.5 stone (67kg), over a four year period and landed a job as a fitness model. Now she shares her progress with her 45,000 Instagram followers, and hails her weight loss to a lifestyle change rather than a diet.

"Don't waste time on diets – you can't live by a certain diet your entire life! Especially when it's some weird juice diets, no-carb diets and stuff that execute certain things," she captioned a recent post. "All you have to do is eat less, one portion per meal, healthy AND balanced."

The 21-year-old also advised people to become more active, and focus their diet around protein and lots of green vegetables, with unhealthy food in "moderate and normal sizes".

We couldn't have said it better ourselves!
