Just days after Eamonn Holmes made a jibe about his wife Ruth Langsford's weight, the Belfast-born presenter got a taste of his own medicine. The couple were chatting to This Morning's health expert Steve Miller about ways to drop the pounds, with Steve admitting you can treat yourself to one muffin a week, but not four.

"And not 16," Eamonn chipped in, prompting Steve to ask: "Are you having 16?" "What you looking at me for? You can say whatever you want about my fatness and everybody laughs," Eamonn said. "No, they don't laugh," said Steve, before saying on a serious note: "You are a bit, now you'll go all red here. You are a bit of a UK treasure, a national treasure, but I'm a little bit worried you've put a bit [of weight] on."

"I'm a little bit worried you've put a bit [of weight] on," said Steve Miller

Taken aback, Eamonn said: "Do you think so?" to which Steve replied: "I do." Ruth, who was sat next to her husband, tried to stifle a giggle as she said: "I'm saying nothing." "She's nodding, she's saying yeah," said Steve. As Eamonn started to chuckle too, he explained: "Well she's a feeder. That's the thing." "It's because I really care about you," said Steve. "I don't want you having a heart attack, I don't want you having a stroke, I don't want you in a box."

Eamonn recently came under fire from This Morning viewers when he joked about his wife's figure. Ruth said her New Year's resolution was to lose weight and revealed that she had downloaded an app to help her. "I'm only allowed 1,200 calories a day," she said. "That's because you're very fat, that's why," Eamonn quipped.

The father-of-four was naturally met with outrage from some fans, who took to Twitter to defend Ruth. Speaking about the backlash on Friday's show, Eamonn said: "If I make a jocular remark about a female, any female, maybe one close to me, oh they're all outraged, they're all outraged on the Twittersphere!"
