The Sinner actress was pictured posing with opponents of vaccination legislation, known as SB 276, which sought to tighten medical exemptions for vaccines in California, meaning it would become more difficult for doctors to grant exemptions to the state's immunization requirements.

Exemptions are typically given to children who have a legitimate medical condition which means they can't be vaccinated. However, Jessica was vocally opposed to the bill, which eventually passed and took effect in January 2020, causing many fans to label her an anti-vaxxer.

But in a lengthy Instagram statement, Jessica denied the claims and said she was not opposing vaccinations, but the legislation to tighten up California immunization laws.

"I am not against vaccinations — I support children getting vaccinations and I also support families having the right to make educated medical decisions for their children alongside their physicians," she began.

Jessica denied she is an anti-vaxxer

"My concern with #SB276 is solely regarding medical exemptions. My dearest friends have a child with a medical condition that warrants an exemption from vaccinations, and should this bill pass, it would greatly affect their family's ability to care for their child in this state.

"That's why I spoke to legislators and argued against this bill. Not because I don't believe in vaccinations, but because I believe in giving doctors and the families they treat the ability to decide what's best for their patients and the ability to provide that treatment."

Despite her best efforts, many of Jessica's followers weren't happy with her explanation. "Try getting a Ph.

D. in science before you post anything like this," replied one. "Can't believe this post is still up," said a second.

A third added: I liked it better when you complained about being too 'beautiful'. Get your degree in epidemiology and then perhaps your *opinion* will be relevant."

There were some fans who agreed with Jessica's statement, with one writing: "Yes! Don't let them bully you into needing to think like them. Medicine is not a one size fits all plan."

Another added: "Thank you for speaking up! Using your fame to put forward something so valid even though it may cause controversy is what the world needs more of right now!!!"
