The Today star - who is also the host of The Voice - has since given an update following his post-surgery checkup, and it's safe to say it came as a surprise to many fans, including himself.

The TV host had a spacer in his spin, and joked that the device looked similar to figures from a nativity scene.

Carson posted a photo of his X-ray on Instagram, along with the caption: "Hello. Quick update - I had my 1st post spine fusion surgery check up today with @andrewhechtmd & everything looks great. Also, we found the missing pieces from our nativity scene! (This is the actual X-ray photo)."

Fans were quick to comment on the post, with one writing: "Wishing you a speedy recovery, love your sense of humor," while another wrote: "Love your sense of humor. Happy you are on the mend." A third added: "Wishing you a smooth recovery Carson!"

The TV star had taken time off work to recover from his surgery but called into Today last week to fill his co-stars in.

He had undergone an Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion surgery, his second back surgery in three months "I feel really good," he told his co-stars.

"I feel really optimistic. I feel like, for anybody who suffered from lower back pain for decades, you don't realize how much pain you're in until it's gone. So I feel very optimistic about the future. ... My future is bright now!"

Carson provided an update after his surgery

Carson has suffered from chronic lower back pain for many years, after suffering from an injury in the nineties. In July, he underwent his first back surgery, but unfortunately he needed a follow up op in August. It's been an incredibly busy time for Carson, who not only hosts Today, but The Voice too.

The NBC talent show is getting ready for its new season, which premieres on Monday 19 September.

The long-running host is incredibly close to his co-stars on the show, including voice coaches Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, whose wedding he officiated in 2021.

His big role in the celebrity nuptials was "very, very special," to him, and at the time he opened up about it to his co-stars on Today.

"It was incredible to be a part of such an important moment in their lives," he said.

The Today anchor returns to host season 22 of The Voice

"The ceremony was a perfect blend of country and glamour, of course, just like Blake and Gwen. The wedding, the best way to describe it, is it was perfectly them the whole weekend and the marriage itself. It was as elegant and refined and cool as Gwen is and it was as country and down-home and fun as Blake is."

At the time, Carson also shared a series of pictures from the special day on social media, alongside the caption: "Here comes the bride… so honoured to get to marry two of my favorite people on earth. May God bless you guys in this new chapter of your lives. We love you!"
