Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing star Catherine Tyldesley worried fans last week when she shared that her husband Tom Pitfield had a cancer scare after finding a lump behind his nipple.
The actress shared a photo that explained that one in 200 breast cancer cases are men, with the main symptom being a lump that appears close to the nipple. Thankfully, Tom did not have breast cancer and instead had gynecomastia, a condition that causes swelling and enlargement around the breast area.
Tom was diagnosed with gynecomastia after a biopsy by breast surgery expert Dr. James Harvey, who also performed a biopsy on Catherine when she discovered a lump several years ago - which turned out to be fine, too.
On Friday, Dr. Harvey took to Instagram to share he was spending the day performing gynecomastia surgery, the procedure Tom could have to treat his condition.
What is gynecomastia?
While gynecomastia is not life-threatening, it can cause some discomfort, hence why someone might opt to have the procedure.
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as breast reduction, involves liposuction of the excess fat or surgical removal of the excess glandular breast tissue through an incision in the nipple area.
It can take two to four weeks to recover from gynecomastia surgery and is not often available to men on the NHS.
To have the surgery privately costs £3,500 to £5,500, plus the cost of any consultations or follow-up care that may not be included in the price.
