Shaun Ryder is currently on our screens as a contestant in the latest series of I'm A Celebrity, following his star turn in the 2010 series, which saw him achieve a 100% record in the show's infamous Bushtucker Trials.

In the last 12 years, the 60-year-old has suffered several bouts of ill health, ranging from alopecia to arthritis to cysts, with fans expressing their concerns about him taking part in the challenging show.

"Did he pass the medical before this? He sure doesn't look in good health," one worried, while another noted: "Shaun has had recent health problems and alopecia."

Shaun is the first to admit his health is not what it once was. Speaking to The Daily Star in June 2022, the Happy Mondays musician joked that he takes more pills now than in his hedonistic heyday in the band. "It's because I don't have a thyroid, mine was underactive and you have to take lots of tablets.

"And I don't produce testosterone now so I'm on more pills now than I was in 1988," he continued.

Shaun has struggled with other health issues over the years, including non-cancerous cysts in his testicles, which he first noticed during lockdown, meaning he was unable to have them operated on.

Speaking to The Sun, Shaun said: "I had one [cyst], now I’ve got two, and they are an absolute pain. I just keep taking the tablets and painkillers as they are hitting the nerves."

Shaun also suffers from arthritis and in 2019 he opened up about alopecia and hip surgery. Talking to Chris Moyles on Radio X, Shaun said: "I've got no eyelashes, no eyebrows, no pubic hair, no leg hair, no armpit hair, everything gone.

"At first they thought it's going to be the testosterone or it's going to be the thyroid. Well, it isn't, because in the thyroid it comes out in clumps, right. Now mine's an alopecia thing and it's just gone. And another thing is, it's not stress-related."

Speaking of his hip operation, Shaun joked: "I woke up just feeling fantastic. Such a buzz! I wanna go for more operations."

Here's hoping the musician stays on top of his health woes in the new series of I'm A Celebrity, with fans excited to see him back on the show.
