TV presenter and professional rock chick Fearne Cotton is taking her first step into the world of beauty, launching a new make-up range, called simply 'Fearne', for Boots, that comes out in September. To tide us over until we can get hold of it, we caught up with Fearne as she'd just come back from filming a new series of Fearne And... with Beth Ditto, Perez Hilton and Mischa Barton. Read on to find out just how involved she was in the development of the range - and the beauty essentials she can't do without.
Why did you want to launch your own cosmetics range?
"This is the most exciting project I've worked on ever and I'm so proud of it - I want to do lots of different creative things outside of TV because I love art and design. The range was a natural step as I'm a make-up junkie and even though it's a collaboration, I was given free rein over the design."
How much of you is in the range?
"They came with an abundance of shades and textures and I sat there for days picking out my favourites, asking my girly friends what they’d like because obviously, I can’t speak for everyone out there. "And I picked shades to suit everyone. The design element of it was the main thing for me – I worked up mood boards and sketches the designers worked off until we got it right with vintage prints mixed with leopard print and the odd subliminal skull. "I didn’t want it to be too rocky and put off girls who aren't into that sort of thing, but it was important for me to have that element of my personality there. There's an influence from my tattoos in the packaging – there's a rose on some of the boxes that’s very similar to a big floral design on my back."
What's different from other ranges out there?
"I wanted it to be easy to take in your handbag because my bag is always weighed down with make-up. And they’re all just such wearable colours. I tried to split it up so it’s easy to see what’s going on – day colours in one set, Gothicy colours for night-time in another. My favourite though is a classic red. I change my nails every couple of days. And they’ve all got motifs instead of names. "
What are your beauty essentials?
"Baby wipes for keeping clean at festivals and also because I often have to get on a plane straight from a studio so I use them to take off my make-up before slathering on a Murad moisturiser and a spritz of Evian water spray. "I take melatonin to get my sleep pattern back to normal and vitamin C and fish oil and zinc. I treat myself to Murad facials every now and then. I’m getting a few lines under the eyes and on my forehead because I’m quite expressive when I’m talking which I need to stop. "And I get really heavy sleep wrinkles on my chest in the morning. I have an amazing hairdresser in Mark Hill who cuts and colours my hair and he is the best hairdresser in the world – his products have really helped me grow my hair. And I moisturise my body twice a day.
