'I try not to put the focus on looks': Katie Holmes talks teaching beauty to Suri

March 11, 2013

Katie Holmes has revealed that she plans on making sure her six-year-old daughter Suri is oblivious to make-up for as long as possible. "As a mother, I'm pretty much imparting what my mother and grandmother taught me," she said. "We'll have fun with lip gloss and all those things, and my daughter will grow up and wear it like we do, but I try not to put the focus on looks. "It's definitely more about running really fast and reading, that sort of thing," she added.

Katie, who is the first celebrity face of US cosmetics line Bobbi Brown, hasn't always shown an interest in make-up. But she has developed an understanding of its power to provide confidence. "While you don't want to walk around depending on your beauty, it's nice to have products out there that help when you haven't slept enough, or if you're going into a big meeting and you're a little nervous," she said. "It might be that tube of lipstick that gives you the extra dose of confidence you need. Women in this day and age handle so much, and I think those little things really matter." Suri recently flew to London to spend time with her father, Tom Cruise, who Katie divorced last year. The toddler was lucky enough to fly by private jet. "Last week, Tom sent his private jet to NYC to pick up Suri so she could come to London and spend some time with him," a source told E! News.

"He is currently staying at a hotel just outside of London. She spent five days with him. He has been working quite long hours on the set, but he was able to have some time off to be with her. "They had a really lovely time." Tom is currently based in London shooting scenes for the sci-fi thriller All You Need is Kill. He is said to feel at home in the British capital and recently told reporters: "I love it here. I have made so many films here and I have worked with so many of the actors here. It is a wonderful place to live." Suri, six, lives in Manhattan with her mother Katie Holmes following her divorce from Tom in June 2012. Suri last spent time with her dad in November, when they celebrated Thanksgiving together. Her siblings Connor and Isabella – from her dad's marriage to Nicole Kidman – were also there. "We have got lots of very special things planned. We are all going to be together and I am looking forward to it," Tom said at the time. Suri's mum Katie has carved out a low-key life for them in the Big Apple. They're often seen enjoying the city's attractions and the former Dawson's Creek actress rides the subway with her daughter. She surprised the world with her separation and subsequent divorce from her actor husband last summer. But Katie didn't skip a beat with carrying on with life as a single woman, enjoying critical acclaim with her Broadway play Dead Accounts as well as continuing success with the Holmes & Yang fashion line, which she runs with her stylist Jeanne Yangher.
