The make-up artist behind Uma Thurman's look has spoken out over speculation that the Kill Bill star has had cosmetic surgery. Troy Surratt told People magazine that the Hollywood beauty had actually been experimenting with a new beauty look that focused less on lashes. He added that he was "surprised" by comments which suggested the actress has had procedures done.

"I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks – it's only make-up, at the end of the day it all washes off," he said.

He said that he and Uma discussed the effect they were going for in detail before her appearance at the launch of her new TV show The Slap. Troy described the look as "effortless Parisian chic", saying that it focused on her lips and complexion.

"I wanted to give Uma a statement lip balanced by a more feathered brow," he shares. "Uma and I discussed creating a look that was more editorial with soft natural lashes. As a make-up artist I've grown a bit tired of all of the lash-y looks and fake eyelashes that we’ve been seeing on the red carpet for some time now."

It's been a difficult few months for the star, who last year faced a custody hearing over her daughter with millionaire financier Arpad Busson, two-year-old Luna.

Uma later issued a statement, saying she hoped the situation would be sorted out amicably.

"It is unfortunate that this very private discussion regarding Mr Busson’s visitation rights and his participation in decision making has been made public," a spokesperson for the star said. “However, we are optimistic that a fair agreement for both sides will be reached out of court.”

The actress also has two other children from her marriage to Ethan Hawke, 16-year-old Maya and Levon, 12.
