Crayola 'strongly discourage' new pencil make-up craze

May 22, 2015

A new beauty craze has been sweeping the nation, in beauty bloggers' bids to find creative and different ways to create a bold make-up look. Beauty addicts have been dipping ordinary wax colouring pencils into warm water and applying them to their eyes and lips, as an alternative to eyeliners and lip liners.

Vloggers have been using Crayola pencils to create colourful new styles, claiming that the method is safe because the pencils are not toxic. Some have also noted that colouring pencils are often cheaper than make-up tools.

"Pencils are safe to use on your skin, your face because it's not toxic," says blogger Rachel Levin during a tutorial on her YouTube channel Rclbeauty101. "Companies literally make it so that little kids can eat it and be fine."

However, arts and crafts giant Crayola, who appear to be the company of choice for fashionistas trying out the new trend, have issued a statement in which they advise people to stop using their pencils as these have not been tested for beauty use.

"Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make eyeliner, lip stick or other make-up, and strongly discourage their use in this manner," read the statement. "The products were never intended to be used on the skin or face in this manner.

"Make-up goes through specific and rigorous testing because it is intended to be used on the skin. Because they were never meant to be used as make-up, our coloured pencils or crayons have not been tested in the same way and should not be used as a cosmetic. They are not designed, tested or approved for this purpose."

Many have taken to social media to draw comparisons with the 'Kylie Jenner challenge', which saw the Keeping up with the Kardashians star's fans trying to recreate her plump lips by using vaccumms and glasses or bottle tops to create suction on their lips. The challenge caused a social media frenzy as many revealed they were left with severe bruising and swollen lips, with the reality TV star addressing her fans, urging them to stop risking further damage.

"I'm not here to try & encourage people/young girls to look like me or to think this is the way they should look," she wrote in the first of two posts. "I want to encourage people/young girls like me to be YOURSELF & not be afraid to experiment w your look," she continued.
