The Cannes Film Festival saw the world's most glamorous women from Sienna Miller to Charlotte Casiraghi upping the beauty stakes with show-stopping make-up and sleek updos, but there was one trend that dominated the red carpet: the statement lip. Pinks, bright reds and gothic purples were seen at every event during the festival, from premieres to galas.
We take a look at how to master the season's biggest beauty trend, inspired by Hollywood's A-list.

Apply primer
Before you apply any colour, prep your lips and apply primer – this will stop the colour from running when you put the lipstick on.
Outline your lips
Use a lip liner – start at the Cupid's bow of your lips and work outwards. You can also apply the colour to the corners of your lips for extra definition. Try and choose a shade as close to your lipstick as possible, to make it easier to blend.

Apply lipstick
Start from the centre of your lips and work outwards. Use a lip brush instead of applying the lipstick directly – this will make it easier to gradually build up the colour, which is especially handy if you're trying out the trend for the first time.
Apply translucent powder
Take a regular tissue and separate its layers. Place one layer lightly over your freshly applied colour, and then use a big brush to lightly dust some powder foundation on your lips, through the tissue. Once you are done, apply another layer of colour to finish off the look – the powder will set the colour.
Complete the look
If you're opting for a bright red statement lip, try and keep the rest of your make-up simple to avoid overloading. However, burgundy and dark purple shades can look great with dark smokey eyes for a gothic look, while bright pinks can make for a vibrant summer finish when teamed with colourful eyeshadows.
