How to master the pink lipstick trend

January 20, 2016

Pink lipstick dominated the red carpet beauty trends in 2015, and there's no doubt it's here to stay. Stars including Olivia Palermo, Katy Perry and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley rocked the look at the Golden Globes, while Kylie Jenner recently revealed the latest shade in her lip kit will be a matte pink.

Whether you want to try statement fuschia or pale rose hues, we take a look at three ways to master the trend…

Katy Perry opted for dusty pink shades

Step one: Pale pink lips can be both understated or make a statement – the paler you go, the more noticeable the colour. Don't go too light however or you may find you end up looking washed out, especially if you're fair-skinned, so try to stick to dusty pink shades. Matte colours work great for this look, but if you really want a shine finish then search for lipsticks with a light sheen.

Step two: Prep your lips with a light primer or concealer that matches your chosen lipstick as closely as possible and line with a similar toned lip liner to stop the colour from bleeding.

Step three: Use a lip brush to apply the lipstick evenly – blot your lips afterwards if you're unsure. You can also make the colour pop by complementing the look with a hint of peach or rose toned blusher.

Step one: Bright coloured shades can highlight dry and chapped likes, so exfoliate before applying any product. Mix a tablespoon of brown sugar with honey, and then rub the scrub onto your lips. After one minute, wipe off with a damp washcloth and apply lip balm. Next, apply a moisturising lip balm.

Step two: Apply a lip stain matching your lipstick to your lips, and use a similar toned liner. Because this look is so bold, don't apply the lipstick at once. Instead, use a brush to gradually build the colour.

Step three: You can add a slick of lipgloss for a high shine finish, or stick to a matte shade – just remember to check your lipstick as matte bright pink lipsticks can sometimes show any dry or chapped areas as it wears off throughout the night.

Step one: To get the almost nude lipstick look, make sure to pick a shade that suits your skin tone. Fair-skinned ladies should opt for rosy beige shades, while olive-skinned ladies might want to try pink tinted hues with darker undertones. If you have tanned or darker skin, search for a colour that's a shade lighter than your complexion.

Step two: Prep your lips with a light concealer and lip liner that match your skin tone and lipstick as closely as possible.

Step three: Use a lip brush to apply the lipstick all over your lips as evenly as possible – because it's an almost nude shade, an uneven application will stand out more. Stick to matte lipsticks for daytime, but if you want to give it an extra glamorous finish for night, add a slick of nude lipgloss.
