Kourtney Kardashian may be hailed as a beauty icon by her millions of fans, but the Keeping up with the Kardashians star recently confessed that she had committed a major make-up faux pas. Embarking on a clear-out of her impressive collection of products, the mother-of-three had a shock when she opened a tube of lipstick she had owned for over six years.

Kourtney Kardashian discovered a lipstick she owned for six years had expired

The 37-year-old shared her spring cleaning endeavours in a short video shared on her eponymous website, joined by her close friend and beauty guru Sarah Howard. "We got rid of so much makeup that I've had for years, and it felt so good," she wrote in the accompanying post.

While clearing out drawers filled with lipglosses and lipsticks, Kourtney and Sarah came across a lipstick which Kourtney admitted she had bought "before Mason was born".

"There's mould on here!" exclaimed Sarah when she opened the tube. "Just letting you know there's mould. No, there's mould. That's disgusting."

"I bought that at the airport in France before Mason was born," Kourtney explained, admitting that she had owned the product for at least six or "probably eight" years.

Beauty addicts around the world will know that one of the golden rules of make-up is that it does need to be thrown out after a certain amount of time, as all products have expiry dates. Ideally, Kourtney should have thrown out her lipstick after about two years, when they tend to go off.

WHEN TO THROW OUT YOUR MAKE-UP: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

If you have a lipstick that you've owned for a while and are unsure about whether it needs to be ditched, there are some easy tell-tale signs to determine whether it has expired. For example, if it has lost its creamy consistency and colour, or has a significant smell, it's time to throw it out and update your beauty bag.
