Strobing: why stars from Jennifer Aniston to Jennifer Lopez love the look

September 12, 2016

Do you long for subtle shimmer but worry you'll end up with teen queen sparkle? Follow HELLO! Beauty Editor Nadine Baggott's expert guidelines - guaranteed to give you a radiant, grown-up glow.

Everyone is baking and strobing, shimmering and highlighting, but how is it possible to get that gorgeous glow on grown-up skin? Hollywood stars including Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez manage it, while Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman prove that a subtle sheer shimmer can create a health glow on all skin colours and tones.

The secret is to choose the right product and to put it in the right place - so we asked some of the world's top make-up artists to give us some pointers on how to achieve that coveted glowing result.

"Highlighter is so fashionable, but I know a lot of women are wary of it because it can highlight good and bad things," says Sarah-Jane Froom, international make-up artist for bareMinerals. "We are all faced with YouTube tutorials, Instagram images and Twitter pics with these very young, full-faced girls strobing and shimmering, but that doesn't really relate to a woman over 35 who might be concerned with fine lines.

"Still, that doesn’t mean you can't get that gorgeous glow; it’s simply a question of adding light to the skin in a grown-up way."

For starters, you need to think of highlighting as just that: adding light to your skin and your make-up routine, not sparkle or shimmer.

"Think of where light reflects back off your face when your skin is in perfect health: your brow bones and the tops of your cheekbones," says Sarah-Jane.

"The centre panel of your face should be subtly lighter than the cheeks and sides. This can be done with the softest, most subtle powders and lotions." Or glotions, as they should perhaps be known.
