How to rock the cool colour block make-up look

Rihanna recently rocked it at the 2017 Met Gala and Salvatore Ferragamo showed off the trend at its SS17 show in Milan - that's enough to convince us that colour blocking is hot to trot this season! So how exactly do we recreate this style ourselves? MUA, Beauty Blogger and Founder of Blush + Blow, Bridget O'Keeffe, has given us the lowdown.

Rihanna rocked a head turning look

Rihanna made a statement at the 2017 Met Gala

“Colour blocking is when you use a punchy dose of one or two strong and bright coloured eye shadows over the majority of your lid as well as underneath,” she told Cover Media. “If you are going to colour block with contrasting shades work each colour onto the top and bottom lash lines respectively. Use a white liner in your water line to make the contrast pop.

It may sound daunting but it's a lot of fun to get on board, especially for a big night out on the town. A punchy, 'bright' shade needn't be one you feel uncomfortable with – identify a colour which you feel complements your skin or eye colour and you can get away with a thick line rather than overall lid coverage if that's more your thing. As for underneath keep it close to your lashline and thick enough to make a statement and stand out, as you don't want your lid taking over with all the attention.

You can't go pastel or pale though as Bridget insists “anything loud” works best, adding: “I personally love bright red or pink!” Urban Decay's Electric Pressed Pigment Palette certainly isn't for the faint-hearted and boasts nine bold shades along with a silver shadow, perfect to break up the contrasting colours. Makeup Revolution Salvation Palette Colour Chaos is just as bright so be willing to truly push the boat out.

There's good news for those who don't wear a lot of eye make-up though as it doesn't just have to be your peepers in on the look. “You can even use the colour on your cheeks and lips,” Bridget suggested.

So get your hands on some vivid lippies and blushers if this is the approach you're going for! L'Oreal Infallible Lip Paint comes in six bright options, such as the eye-popping purple Wuthering, or try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in a range of choices. As for your cheeks, give Freedom Pro Blush Palette Pink And Baked or e.l.f. Blush Palette a whirl as each have several options.
