New ways to work ultra violet make-up

The 2018 take on this eighties trend

January 12, 2018

In December, hair institute Pantone announced its 2018 Colour of the Year was Ultra Violet and we were all pretty excited. "A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, #UltraViolet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us to the future," said Pantone on the official announcement on Instagram. #UltraViolet makes a statement, whether it's one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness."

The regal hue has had an interesting history and became a symbol for the suffragette movement, signifying loyalty and dignity.

Blondie and Madonna rocked it in the eighties and Christina Aguilera showed us how to team it with braids and a red lip in the nineties and now violet is back with a very sleek edge. And if the beauty looks at this years' Golden Globes are anything to go by, we think we're going to be seeing the hue everywhere. But if the thought of channelling a purple smoky eye seems daunting, try these A-list approved ways to work ultra violet into your beauty routine.

Vivid Violet

If an all over shadow feels a little harsh, a violet accent around the eyes is the most subtle take on the trend (and the best way to make green or hazel eyes pop). A liquid liner with a metallic finish makes this look way more interesting too.

 All Over Shimmer

If you thought a purple eye shadow would make you look like you’ve been on the losing side of a boxing match, how wrong you were. The best way to sport a purple smoky eye without looking a little too extra is to add some shimmer. Tap a creamy luminous shadow into the socket and over the lid for an instantly softer and more polished feel.
