While no-one can deny the classic beauty of a bronze smokey eye or a black winged liner, it looks like 2018 might just be the year we embrace something different when it comes to eye makeup - that is, if the red carpets are anything to go by. With this year's awards season in full swing, it seems that all things colour are on the agenda when it comes to adorning our peepers - and everything from baby blue, mermaid green and even tangerine orange have been seen on our favourite A-listers.
Emma Stone wore purple and green eyeshadow at this year's Golden Globes
In fact, the internet went crazy for a new Nickelodeon-themed eyeshadow palette earlier this year, which features ten bright and clashing colours. The product completely sold out, so it looks like bold eyeshadow looks really are here to stay - and who says they have to be scary or unwearable? These ladies certainly know how to rock the look!

Aqua blue
Rita Ora looked beautiful in neon blue eyeshadow for the press launch of her latest single For You with Liam Payne. Teaming the bright colour with a glamorous blow-dry and soft, glowing skin, the star proved less is more when it comes to bold looks - and won hundreds of compliments from fans with her Instagram post. The look was created by makeup artist Kathy Jeung - who is responsible for many of the singer's colourful looks - using Rimmel makeup.
Pop of pink
Another makeup artist who's not afraid of colour is Instagram guru Patrick Ta, whose clients include Rosie Huntington Whitely and Kim Kardashian. For actress Alison Williams at a recent awards event, he created this soft pink smokey eye using the Christian Dior 887 Thrill palette, keeping the rest of the look neutral and nude.
Speaking about colourful eye shadow to Allure last year, Patrick stressed how important it is to keep the skin fresh. Describing a fuchsia look he created for Sophia Bush, he said, "because the eye is so intense, I wanted to keep the skin as fresh and natural as possible. So to do that, I sheered out the foundation with a little bit of oil so that you could see the texture of her skin underneath."
Sunshine orange
Margot Robbie is another star who doesn't shy away from bright eye makeup, most recently rocking a tangerine orange look during the promotional tour of her latest film, I Tonya. Teaming the look with a matching sheer lip and even wearing a co-ordinating floral outfit, the actress showed it is possible to repeat shades, rather than keep one feature as the focus.

Purple power
At the 2018 Golden Globes, colour was used as a powerful statement in support of women's rights - most notably on actresses Emma Stone and Lena Headey - whose looks were created by celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. “Purple as everyone knows is the royal colour. It stands for the royal blood that flows through the veins of every suffragette, the instinct for freedom and dignity. White stands for purity in private and public life… and green the colour of hope," the makeup artist posted on Instagram, describing her bold colour palette for the night.
Ocean green
Meanwhile, Hailee Steinfeld's bold mermaid-esque Grammys makeup look was teamed with golden bronzed skin and loose waves to give a bombshell finish - showing there's so many ways to rock colour. Excuse us while we head out to buy some blue eyeshadow…
