MAC refused to photoshop a model's facial hair and the internet is divided

The cosmetic giant is the latest brand keeping things real

When it comes to beauty adverts, we’re pretty used to seeing the faces in them looking flawless and pristine with barely a pore in sight – let alone a glimpse of facial hair. So it's refreshing to see cosmetics giant MAC fighting back against photoshopped perfection and refusing to edit a model's facial hair from one of its social media posts. The brand reposted a snap from makeup artist Matthew King showing him applying lipliner to a model's mouth. In the image, the model's – admittedly very fine – facial hairs are visible on her upper lip. Matthew had captioned the image: "Into the woods with Lip Pencil in Chestnut is probably the closest to nature we'll get this year."

And plenty of the brand's followers appreciated the picture getting close to nature too. One wrote: "Appreciate you for not editing or photoshopping the model" and another added: "Thank you Mac. Beauty is not always about perfection. Color is gorgeous. And shock horror women have hair on their bodies!! Who knew!!"

However, some beauty fans weren't quite so excited about the natural look. One wrote: "She has got a moustache" and another commented: "OMG! What about the moustache on her mouth." But they were quickly schooled by other commenters, with one replying: "We are in 2018. Body hair is now ok. Come back to reality k?"

MAC isn’t the first brand to do away with photoshop recently. Underwear label Figleaves has released a brand new advertising campaign featuring women of all different shapes, sizes and skin tone – all unedited. As well as showcasing the label's gorgeous range of undies, the untouched images show the models' lumps, bumps, stretchmarks and scars in all their beautiful glory. Head of buying and brand Jenni Burt said: "Figleaves welcomes all women and it's important they feel visually represented when they visit our website."
