When he or she arrives, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's baby will want for nothing. So the kind-hearted mum-to-be has decided to turn her attention to those considerably less fortunate.Kim, 32, has reportedly requested that, rather than bring gifts, all the guests at her upcoming baby shower make donations to charity instead. The socialite and her rapper boyfriend are said to have banned all invitees from bringing presents for the baby, preferring that they use that money to help a worthwhile cause.
Their generous gesture may well have been inspired by another celebrity couple – Shakira and Gerard Pique.Shortly before welcoming their baby boy on January 22, the singer and her footballer love launched an online baby shower in support of some of the world's most vulnerable babies. The interactive UNICEF website welcomes friends and fans of the couple into their virtual living room, where they can scroll through never-before-seen pictures, learn about the issue of child survival and purchase an 'Inspired Gift' to help babies around the world get off to a healthy start. On entering the online baby shower, visitors are greeted with a personal message from Shakira and Gerard. "As you know, we will soon be welcoming our first child into the world, and to celebrate his birth we've organised a virtual baby shower in association with UNICEF," the couple announced. "In lieu of receiving gifts for our baby with a traditional shower we would like to offer support for babies who live in conditions of extreme poverty throughout the world."
On the site, visitors can spend as little as US $5, which can buy a mosquito net to ensure a sleeping child stays safe from malaria. For US $10, they can purchase polio vaccines to protect 17 children from the disease, while US $37 buys baby-weighing scales to monitor growth in the first critical years of life. The highest-costing item is life-saving Therapeutic Food US ($110), a peanut-based paste that can save a severely malnourished child."Every expectant parent around the world shares all the same hopes and dreams for their children that we do," Shakira said. "Yet many don't share the same opportunities. Together we know we can change that. "As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Shakira is a prominent campaigner for the children's charity; while heavily pregnant, she posed with her footballer boyfriend in a series of intimate photos to help promote the baby shower. It has been a little over a week now since the couple welcomed their first child in Barcelona, announcing the birth of their son Milan Pique Mebarak on the singer's official website. The proud parents are now back at home with their baby boy, enjoying time together as a family.
