Currently the 10th most popular name given to baby boys so far this year, it has been steadily increasing in popularity over the last few months — and it was the eighth most popular name given to little boys in June.

Alexander and Louis, the baby's middle names, are considerably less popular, ranked 42nd and 86th respectively, but with the weight of the Prince behind them are expected to see a dramatic rise in the near future.

Interestingly, as he grows up in Kensington Palace, the little Prince's playmates are likely to include an Alexander — third in the top five boys names in west London this year. Oliver, Adam, Sebastian and Charlie complete the list.

Meanwhile, the top five boys names in Berkshire, where Prince George's grandparents Michael and Carole Middleton live, are Jack, Harry, Oscar, Jacob and Oliver.

Lisa Penney, spokesmum for Bounty.com, said, "Our members predicted that the couple would plump for the name George and we love their choice, which certainly befits a king of England and reflects the current resurgence we have seen for more traditional ‘vintage-style’ names.

"Our records show that year after year parents continue to be influenced by popular culture so it’s highly likely that George will rise up the ranks in future baby names popularity charts, alongside other traditional names like Harry, Jack and Oliver who continue to battle it out at the top to be crowned the king of boys’ names.  "We’ve actually seen a sharp drop in popularity for the names Alexander and Louis since last year - so it will be interesting to see if these follow suit as well now they have been chosen for the new royal."
