Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter welcome baby boy

June 13, 2015

Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife Sophie Hunter have taken on the role of a lifetime as the proud parents of a baby boy. Representatives for the actor, who was named a CBE on the Queen's birthday honours list on Friday, confirmed the news on Saturday 13 June."Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are delighted to announce the arrival of their beautiful son," read a statement from the couple.

Theatre director Sophie gave birth to a son

Just before the special arrival the duo reportedly bought a country house near where their wedding took place on Valentine's Day on the Isle of Wight. Expectant Sophie, a respected theatre director, looked beautiful in an ethereal medieval-style dress featuring a high waist that flattered her baby bump. The Cumberbatches barely had time to celebrate as Benedict had to support his film The Imitation Game during awards season and then he went on to film Richard III. He said that he and his wife were looking forward to nesting after that busy time. "I've been on muddy fields and on horseback playing Richard III for the BBC and I've been on more flights to Los Angeles and back than I can count," the star told the Daily Mail in February. "All of that has been special, but I'm ready to have a couple of months to ourselves to prepare for the baby and do some nesting. It's a real-life role, not a part."

The baby boy is the couple's first child

It's a role that the 38-year-old is very much looking forward to playing. "I'm so excited to meet my child, and it's a huge part of my life and it'll be the most important part of my life, as it should be" he told ET Canada.

He went on to cite several peers who combine acting with family life including Daniel Day Lewis, Mark Strong and Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman.

Benedict concluded: "I think what children do is enhance your life, they don't inhibit it. They don't limit it, they give you inspiration and depths of understanding of the human condition and what it is to be on this planet and what our purpose is, that goes well beyond anything a childless actor could hope for."
