For Eddie Redmayne 2015 will be a very difficult year to top. It was the year in which he won his first Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

But 2016 is already looking very exciting for the actor, 33, and his wife Hannah Bagshawe as it has been revealed that they are expecting their first child together.

Sources have told The Sun that the Oscar winner and his publicist wife have already shared the happy news with close friends and family and that the new bundle of joy is due next June. The couple, who celebrated their first wedding anniversary on 15 December, are said to be "extremely excited" at the prospect of becoming first-time parents.

According to the newspaper Eddie and Hannah don't want to find out the sex of the baby.

The new year will also be full of exciting new projects for the father-ro-be. The British actor's new film The Danish Girl hits cinemas on New Year's Day. In it, he portrays Lili Elbe, one of the first known people to have undergone sex reassignment surgery.

In November the highly anticipated film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – a spin-off of JK Rowling's successful Harry Potter series – will be released.

The film takes place in 1926, decades before Harry, Ron and Hermione walked the halls of Hogwarts and Eddie plays Newt Scamander, a magical zoologist who arrives in New York City with a suitcase full of exotic and supernatural creatures. Chaos ensues when some of the creatures escape into the magic-intolerant world of the 'No-Maj' – a group who are intolerant of wizards and witches.
