Andy Murray and Kim Sears' fans have been expressing their delight at the birth of baby Murray, but no one is more excited than the couple's family. The tennis player's grandmothers have been speaking about the little bundle of joy and revealed the moment they found out about the new arrival.
Andy sent a group text announcing the birth of his daughter – adding that no name had been decided yet. He then called his paternal grandmother Ellen Murray, 82, the day after.
"Andy phoned yesterday and said 'congratulations, you're a great granny'," Mrs Murray told BBC Scotland from her home in North Lanarkshire. "He told me the baby was 8lb 10oz when she was born. It's wonderful news. We watched him in the Australian Open final and I think he just wanted to come home."
Andy sent a group text around to his family saying "she's doing well, no name yet"
"I don't really know about her name yet but I hope we'll see them all soon," she added. "I'll be looking forward to a cuddle. Gordon is very happy too. They did a good job, aye."
Andy flew back to the UK after exiting the Australian Open, to be at his wife's side as she approached her due date. The new parents didn't know what gender their baby was.
Shirley Erskine, Andy's maternal grandmother, added: "Andy and Kim said from the outset that they didn't want to know, so I'm assuming that they didn't know and of course none of us knew, so it was nice to get a little surprise like that."
The baby was 8lb 10oz when she was born
She first heard of the baby's birth via text, which said "she's doing well". But Mrs Erskine hadn't received the first message announcing the arrival.
"I thought 'Oh something's happened'," she said. "So, I frantically texted him back, saying 'What's happened? What's happened?'"
Andy then apologised as he realised the first text hadn't come through.
"I am absolutely delighted, as you can imagine," said Mrs Erskine. "It seems a long time that we've been waiting for this but all's well now as far as I know. I don't have any details, I just know that I've got a great granddaughter so that is just lovely."
Andy and Kim, both 28, became parents to their little girl on Sunday morning, the athlete's agent confirmed. A statement was released that said: "Andy and Kim had a daughter in the early hours of Sunday morning and the family are doing well."
