Scandal actress Kerry Washington has given birth to a boy. This is the second child for the 39-year-old and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha.

According to E! News, the couple's son - who was born on October 5 - has been named Caleb Kelechi, which means "devotion to God" in Hebrew.

Kerry, who also shares two-year-old daughter Isabelle Amarachi with her partner, revealed she was pregnant in May when she showed off a bump at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, DC.

The notoriously private couple secretly tied the knot in 2013 in Hailey, Idaho. They welcomed their first child at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre a year later, however both Kerry and Nnamdi managed to keep news of her arrival a secret for 11 days.

The American star previously admitted that she felt that motherhood allowed her to focus on "being the best version" of herself.

"I've been really focused on not being 'back' to anything, but being the best version of myself right now," she told Self Magazine. "My body is the site of a miracle now. I don't want to be pre-miracle."

Earlier this year, Kerry addressed the ongoing rumours that her marriage to sporting ace Nnamdi was in trouble, making it clear she has no interest in speaking about her personal life.

"Social media has actually been great for (other celebrities') relationships with the weeklies or the gossip sites because people say things and they say, 'That's not true!' So I'm thinking in some ways, it's been great because people are able to maintain their voice," she told E! News. "It's a little different for me because I don’t talk about my personal life."

Kerry propelled into the spotlight in 2012 thanks to her appearance in the ABC drama Scandal, a Shonda Rhimes series in which she plays Olivia Pope. She also starred in Django Unchained as Jamie Foxx's enslaved wife Broomhilda von Shaft.
