Most popular baby names by city revealed

Olivia and Oliver continue to hold the crown, as do Jack and Amelia

Olivia, Amelia, Jack and Oliver continue to be some of the most popular baby names in the UK. A new study by Character Cottages, using national records from BabyCentre, has revealed the most common boy and girl names for each city. Olivia and Amelia continue to hold the crown for girls, with either name being the top choice in over half of UK cities. Amelia is most popular in Leeds, Manchester, Bath, Sheffield, Southampton and London among other cities, while Olivia is the go-to choice for residents of Nottingham, Derby and St Albans.

For boys, Jack and Oliver remain a favourite, each being the top boy's name in 12 UK cities. Jack is popular in cities including Leeds, Exeter, Wolverhampton, Worcester and Peterborough, while Oliver ranks top in Hull, Bradford, Preston, Cambridge and Chichester among other cities.

Some of the less common names which topped the list in just one city include Eilidh and Tom in Perth, and Ryan and Grace in Newry. Welsh boy's name Osian is most common in one in three Welsh cities. Other names that are a popular choice across the UK as a whole, but didn't necessarily come top, are Muhammed and Ethan for boys and Sophia and Isla for girls.

In terms of specific cities, parents in London are fans of Muhammed and Amelia, in Manchester Harry and Amelia, in Leeds Jack and Amelia, in Birmingham Alfie and Amelia, in York George and Jessica, in Oxford Jack and Emily, and in Brighton Oscar and Evie.

The ten most popular names for boys in order are: Oliver, Muhammed, Noah, Harry, Jack, Charlie, Jacob, George, Ethan and Henry. The ten most popular for girls are: Olivia, Lily, Sophia, Emily, Amelia, Ava, Isla, Isabella, Isabelle and Sophie.
