Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's first baby is due in early 2021 and we couldn't be happier for the couple. Royal fans around the world are wondering about the sex and potential name for their child – we wonder what they will go for!

Royal births often inspire other parents-to-be when it comes to naming their newborns, and with that in mind, Gigicalculator.com has researched the most and least popular royally connected monikers in 2020.

The site gathered a list of baby names with regal connotations from nameberry.com and looked at how the popularity of each name has increased or decreased in 2020.

Right now, the most sought-after royal inspired girls' name is Contessa (meaning Countess), with a spike of 125%.

The cute name Queenie comes in second with an increase of 34% in the last year, while the moniker Royal is up 31% in popularity. Rani, Rhiannon and Raina are next in line.

When it comes to the least popular royal-inspired girls' names, Regina has fallen 23% and Lady, Majesty and Tiana are also out of favour.

The most sought-after regal boys' name is Marquis (loving this!) with an increase of 117% from last year. Pharaoh, Count, Quinton and Sir are next in line, followed by Duke, Reign and Rainier.

The boys' names Rex – meaning 'king' in Latin – and Kingston have lost popularity, however.

How about naming your child Duke or Queenie?

You may be wondering where the more traditional royal names like Catherine and Elizabeth are. Well, it seems that unusual names are proving more popular these days; Google trends reports a 64% spike in searches for 'unusual names' from September 2019 to September 2020.
