Baby names are such a personal decision for parents – it could be a matter of continuing a family name or they could be inspired by a special location or favourite TV show. But what about culinary-related monikers?

Many mums and dads have likely not considered naming their child after a certain cuisine, but these types of names are actually quite popular – we're talking drinks, edible flowers, herbs and even fruits such as Apple, which is the name of Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter.

Virginia Hayward analysed recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) data to find the most popular food and drink-related names in England and Wales between 1996 and 2019.

At the top of the girls' list was Poppy, with 2,022 babies named after the seed in 2019. Other names such as Rose, Jasmine, Olive and Hazel also made the top five, while some celebrity and royal names featured.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden's moniker was ranked as number seven, after the cake, while Reese Witherspoon's name (which was recognised as unisex) may also be popular among parents who love Reese’s Pieces.

Princess Madeleine's name was among the most popular food-related names for girls

There appeared to be far more fruit-related options for girls, such as Clementine, Peach and Cherry, than there were for boys. Instead, herbs and meats inspired more baby boy names, with Reuben (the sandwich) taking the top spot, followed by Dexter, a type of beef, and Frank, after a sausage.

Kobe, Pippin and Gordon also made the cut – and while the latter is said to be inspired by the gin, it may also be influenced by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.
