Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman In Me, finally hits stands on Tuesday, October 24, but the bombshells have been dropping for days.
Several early excerpts from the memoir have caused waves, from her terminated pregnancy with Justin Timberlake's child to her relationship with sister Jamie Lynn Spears, and now she's wading into her conservatorship.
In an exclusive excerpt released by CBS Mornings, the 41-year-old singer wrote that she agreed to enter into her infamous conservatorship, which lasted from 2008-2021, for "one very good reason."
"I did it for my kids," she revealed, referring to her two sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline, Sean, 18, and Jayden, 17. Following her divorce from Kevin in 2006, and her struggles with her mental health in 2007, she lost physical custody of her sons.
However, she was then placed under a conservatorship the following year, which gave her father Jamie Spears control over her assets. She was eventually granted access to her two boys as a result.
"Because I played by the rules, I was reunited with my boys," she emotionally penned. In more recent years, Britney has claimed that her relationship with her sons, as they've grown older, has become more strained, especially after they reportedly moved to Hawai'i with their dad.
She opened up in another passage of her raw and candid memoir about the stigma placed upon young mothers in the spotlight, highlighting her own experiences with bad press and incessant hounding from the paparazzi.
"Unfortunately, there wasn't the same conversation about mental health back then that there is now," she wrote. "I hope any new mothers reading this who are having a hard time will get help early.
