The former FLOTUS has been an empty nester for several years

Michelle Obama is one of the most famous women in the world but when it comes to her personal life, particularly her daughters' private lives, she rarely opens up.

However, the former FLOTUS gave an incredible - and relatable - insight into her life as a mom shortly after it was revealed that Malia, 25, and Sasha, 22, would be moving in together into a home in Los Angeles.

The Becoming author didn't quite know how to react in front of her daughters when they first told her the news, as she didn't want to put them off the idea by being too enthusiastic!

She told People: "You try not to react too much because it's like, you don't want to go, 'Oh my gosh, I'm so happy for you!' because then they think, 'Well, maybe this is not a good thing if my mom likes it.'"

"So I just said: 'Okay, well that's interesting that you guys are going to try living together. We'll see how it goes.' But yeah, it feels good to know that the two girls you raised find solace at a kitchen table with one another. It's like the one thing you want for them."

Michelle Obama opened up about her daughters Malia and Sasha living together

Michelle and Barack Obama are frequent visitors at their daughters' home, and the doting mom previously told a funny story about being told off by her children for not using a coaster.

In November 2022 during an appearance on Today with Hoda and Jenna, Michelle told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that she was surprised by Malia and Sasha's house rules, joking: "I'm like: 'You never used a coaster in my house.' So now when it’s your stuff, you want to take care of it?"

Malia and Sasha Obama are incredibly close

She also told the hosts that they had enjoyed some cocktails at their daughters' home, but that "the martinis were a little weak. I don’t think they really knew what it was."

Malia and Sasha have an incredibly close relationship, having both experienced out of the ordinary childhoods growing up in The White House. And while they are close now, it wasn't always the case.

Malia and Sasha Obama didn't always have such a close bond

She told Hoda and Jenna: "The thing I love the most is that those two girls are each other's best friends. I mean, there was a period of time when they couldn't stand each other."

Revealing the advice she gave to her daughters to help mend their relationship, she explained "I said, 'You wait. You know, you are going to wake up one day and you're going to look over at that other person and you're going to know that you two share something very unique'.

"Especially given what they've been through," she added, referring to their time in the White House.

The Obamas are notoriously private

The star wrote in her book, The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, about her daughters and their unique childhood too.

She wrote: "I think that they realize that they have a unique bond because they're the only two who know what they just went through — growing up in the White House with the brightest spotlight in the world on you as you were going through adolescence and puberty. They uniquely know what that means for them.

"I think they become even closer now that they're out on the other side. But yeah, it makes me feel really, really good. Not just that they're living together, but they're thriving together — and they're thriving on their own as individual young women."
