It could be Kate vs Katie in the celebrity scent sales wars during the run-up to Christmas. Fashion model Kate Moss – a “perennial favourite” for fragrance fans, according to Superdrug – has launched another perfume that looks set to be a winner while glamour model Katie Price’s popularity slips in the shadow of her marriage break-up.
The former Mrs Andre was the best-selling celeb fragrance at Superdrug last year with Besotted while her debut fragrance, Stunning, hit the top spot in 2007. Now, however, Britney Spears occupies the number-one slot.
Steve Jebson, Superdrug’s commercial director, comments: “Katie Price has been a phenomenal seller in the fragrance department for the past two years. However, this year, it’s looking like she could slip from the top spot. New launches such as Avril Lavigne are bringing a new customer to celebrity fragrance. And Kate Moss is a perennial favourite.”
Kate’s new scent, Vintage, from £23, is a fruity ‘floriental’ that’s been created as an expression of the model’s love of vintage clothes and accessories.
“I am fascinated by vintage pieces because not only do they have a remarkable beauty, but a sense of history, too,” Kate comments. “And yet vintage items can be reinvented with a modern twist to make them fresh and relevant today. That’s why vintage looks have inspired my personal style and now my fragrance.”
It opens with pink pepper, white freesia and mandarin for an initial burst of spicy freshness, with a heart of heliotrope, jasmine and almond flower and drying down to a warm base of tonka bean, vanilla and musks. The bottle, too, has been given a vintage feel taking inspiration from perfumes of the 1920s and ‘30s.
And it’s the perfect time to launch because Superdrug estimates that with £600m being spend on women’s fragrance in the UK, over 40 per cent of which is spent on celebrity perfumes, almost half a million bottles of celebrity fragrance will be sold between now and Christmas.
